KfW, 2022 – 2028
The purpose of the project is to improve the production base and the drought resilience of settled and nomadic livestock keepers in the project region (Ugandan part of the Karamoja cluster), by providing KfW funds for required infrastructure investments. The joint Venture team of GFA,WE Consult and BRL INGÉNIERIE will be assisting the Ugandan government in the construction of three medium seize dams, that provide water for livestock throughout the year. They will be surrounded by smaller satellite water storage infrastructure in order to divert grazing pressure around the larger dams. In addition, access to safe drinking water for herders and neighboring communities, will be provided from boreholes. Complementary livestock interventions aim at strengthening animal health, livestock marketing and animal nutrition through improved pasture management.
The project is divided into three phases over six years and shall be implemented in the Karamoja sub-region in North-Eastern Uganda. The Project Implementing Agency (PIA) is the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) of the Republic of Uganda. The operational responsibility and sector-political guidance of the project will be with MWE. Political and strategic guidance of the project will be assured by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). A Project Management Unit (PMU) will be established at the Regional Water for Production Centre (WfPC) of the MWE in Moroto, Karamoja, where the IC is also based.
