MOMenTUM – 2018

During a 2-year period we measured periodically the microbiological water quality of the Nhartande valley in Tete and assessed the effectivity of intervention measures to decrease contamination of the water sources. We took 200 water samples, varying from waste water streams to tap water at different locations throughout the valley and analyzed them. In cooperation with Orvion BV (a Dutch based company), we used a mobile innovative DNA-technique to measure and investigate the microbiological status of the water (E. Coli, Salmonella and bacteroidetes). Future applications of this technique are still examined, but seem to be promising for Mozambique, mainly because of the significantly reduced analysis time compared to conventional techniques and its universal application possibilities.
